Frequently Asked Questions

MEMBERSHIP

Q    How do I join?
A    Send us an email, or come by one of our practice sessions out of Belmont Harbor, and we will get you signed up.  If you are unsure, then attend a complimentary practice session and use that experience to help you make your decision.  We can always be reached at info@chicagomatchrace.com.

Q    What are the costs of becoming a member?
A    Because of the different skill levels and responsibilities, we have provided two levels of membership.  We also are committed to educating and building the sailing community in Chicago, so all memberships include a provision for volunteer hours.

WEEKLY PRACTICE

Q    How do I get involved?
A    Learn of all the opportunities that the CMRC provides, by joining our mailing list.  To see what match racing is all about, join us at the docks on Monday, Tuesday or Friday at 5pm throughout the summer (see our online schedule).  We'll be operating out of Belmont Harbor North‚ B dock.  As a non-member, you may participate in two free practice sessions.  During this time, we can answer any additional questions about membership or match racing at that time.

Q    Do I need a team?
A    No, we can group together individuals who do not have a full team.  However, it will be better if you are with a team, as you can practice and train together.  If you need to be grouped with a team, please arrive on the dock early, so that we can pair you up, and still get started on-time.

Q    What are the boats and how many people per team?
A    The CMRC uses a fleet of Tom 28 Max boats.  They are specifically designed for match racing and will provide a great sailing experience.  Crews of four or five with maximum weight limit of 350kg or 772lbs.

Q    What time is practice?
A    Practices begin promptly at 5:30pm with a Skippers Briefing.  However, we encourage everyone to arrive early if possible, so that they can meet the other sailors, get paired up, and make sure that they are ready to go.

Q    What is practice?
A    CMRC Practice Sessions consist of preset drills and racing, that will help prepare sailors for the match racing events.  For our Tuesday and Friday sessions, you are expected to have a basic understanding of match racing (see our Curriculum page for more detail).  However, we also have periodic Beginner Practices (see the 2010 Schedule).

Q    What do I need to bring?
A    There is some equipment that you should bring regardless of weather; USCG approved Type III life vest with a whistle, towel, bathing suit or quick-dry clothing, rubber-soled non-skid shoes (preferably closed toe), sunscreen and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, etc), water bottle and a snack.  In the event of inclement weather, you should also be prepared with foul weather gear and an extra set of warm clothes.
